Abstract

This study explores the role of zakat in the development of human resources in Northwest Syria, presenting the foundational concepts of zakat and human development from both Islamic jurisprudential and economic perspectives. It highlights the experience of the Zakat General Authority in northwest Syria, tracing its evolution from 2019 to 2024.

The research focuses on targeted programs such as “Zidni Ilman” (Increase Me in Knowledge), which supports higher education, and “Hayat” (Life), which strengthens the healthcare sector—both regarded as effective tools in addressing the root causes of poverty. The study reveals that only 10.68% of students benefited from the education program despite rising enrollment numbers, indicating a gap between available resources and growing needs.

The study concludes that zakat plays a strategic role in human development, serving as a pathway out of poverty and a means to achieve sustainable development. It calls for expanding and enhancing this model to maximize its impact
